While UCT’s involvement in goalball is new, it is growing steadily as the fixtures go by. Starting in 2016, UCT has had students officiating in the Western Province Goalball League. This association grew from a Goalball workshop that was held at UCT in April 2016. Recently, interest in Goalball has been growing as 80% of the officials at the league fixture, on 12 August 2017 in Lotus River, were UCT students. On 19 August, our students were fortunate enough to play and officiate in the University of Stellenbosch’s Parasports Women’s Goalball Fun Day. Muya and Rowan from UCT Ju-Jitsu were the referees for the day. UCT’s side, the Feline, featured women from our Student Sports Union, sports clubs, and UCT Radio with an ally from UNISA completing the team. The Felines did well in tightly contested games (1 win, 1 loss and 1 draw) and showed spirit from start to finish. Bronwyn, from UCT Fencing, won player of the tournament.
This coming month will be busy for the officials as the next events are: 1 September – Casual Day Sports Festival, and 9, 10 and 16 September- a tournament featuring the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Venda. As the interest grows, it is hoped that UCT will be kept busy not only with officiating, but coaching, playing and supporting as well.
