Correction – VARSITY Newspaper Volume 75 Edition 10 13/09

Written by Aisha Abdool Karim in Letters

There was an error in the centrespread (pages 8 and 9) of the latest edition of VARSITY Newspaper regarding the names of the current members of the 2016 SRC.

The names appeared as follows (Those whose names are incorrect have been highlighted in bold):

President – Rorisang Moseli

Vice-President External – Ryan Prithraj

Vice-President Internal – Nthupula Masipa

Secretary-General – Noxolo Ntaka

Deputy Secretary-General – Denzhe Mabuli

Treasurer – Marcus Gawronsky

Chair: Undergraduate Academics – Zain Bana

Chair: Postgraduate Academics – Grace Moyo

Chair: Day Students – Thembelihle Ncayiyana

Chair: Entertainment and Fundraising – Greg Keal

Chair: Health, Safety and Environment – Tayla Karsten

Chair: International Students – Gloria Chikaonda

Chair: Labour and Services – Athenkosi Nzala

Chair: Residences – Tshegofatso Putu

Chair: Societies – Shehana Bhabha

Chair: Sports and Recreation – Gordon Dodge

Chair: Transformation and Social Responsiveness – Ntebogang Segone

These five names were taken out the SRC’s third organisational report to be presented at Student Parliament on Thursday, September 15th.* The error lies in the fact that these members have not yet officially assumed their position within the 2016 SRC, as Student Parliament still needs to approve their appointment. The members whose names have been highlighted have merely been co-opted and still need to be endorsed at Student Parliament.

The reason these names were placed in the print edition of VARSITY is that according to the UCT website the 2016 SRC members are as follows:

 President – Rorisang Moseli

Vice-President External – Ryan Prithraj

Vice-President Internal – Zipho Majova

Secretary-General – Noxolo Ntaka

Deputy Secretary-General – Louise Bestbier

Treasurer – Marcus Gawronsky

Chair: Undergraduate Academics – Nabeel Allie

Chair: Postgraduate Academics – Eddie Dos Santos

Chair: Day Students – Sinead Johnson

Chair: Entertainment and Fundraising – Busisiwe Nxumalo

Chair: Health, Safety and Environment – Tayla Karsten

Chair: International Students – Gloria Chikaonda

Chair: Labour and Services – No name provided

Chair: Residences – Tshegofatso Putu

Chair: Societies – Nthupula Masipa

Chair: Sports and Recreation – No name provided

Chair: Transformation and Social Responsiveness – Motheo Lengoasa

Given that there are two names not provided on the UCT website and several of the members listed here have resigned from their position, according to organisational reports previously presented at Student Parliament, VARSITY then turned to the SRC’s website for a more recent list of SRC members.

The list provided on the SRC website is as follows:

President – Rorisang Moseli

Vice-President External – Ryan Prithraj

Vice-President Internal – Nthupula Masipa

Secretary-General – Noxolo Ntaka

Deputy Secretary-General – Denzhe Mabuli

Treasurer – Marcus Gawronsky

Chair: Undergraduate Academics – Nabeel Allie

Chair: Postgraduate Academics – Eddie Dos Santos

Chair: Day Students – Samantha Mbekebeke

Chair: Entertainment and Fundraising – Busisiwe Nxumalo

Chair: Health, Safety and Environment – Tayla Karsten

Chair: International Students – Gloria Chikaonda

Chair: Labour and Services – No name provided

Chair: Residences – Tshegofatso Putu

Chair: Societies – Shehana Bhabha

Chair: Sports and Recreation – Gordon Dodge

Chair: Transformation and Social Responsiveness – Ntebogang Segone

Since the position of the Labour and Services Chair was not provided, as well as the fact that members listed year have resigned from the SRC, VARSITY chose not to publish the list of names as it appears here.

While meeting with SRC President Rorisang Moseli, regarding SRC Report Cards for edition 11, VARSITY raised the fact that there were several portfolios in which it was unclear who was occupying that position. Following this query, Moseli directed VARSITY, to the organisational report compiled for the sitting of Student Parliament of September 15th.

The error arose in the print edition where it was not clearly indicated which positions still needed to be filled through endorsement at Student Parliament. Our apologies for any confusion the error caused and I hope this helps provide clarity on the issue.

*Edit 16/09: The sitting of Student Parliament scheduled to take place on September 15th, has been rescheduled to a later date as not enough voting members were present to make binding decisions.
